My nomadic family gets around. We haven't had a permanent residence in years, and our day-to-day lives depend largely on understanding and embracing whatever culture we're in at the moment. In fact, my youngest son Roman is named after the city he was conceived in. You'd think he, of all people, would get the old adage, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." But after months of living in Japan, this is his reaction to meeting Anpanman, his favorite animated character:

But after months of living in Japan, this is his reaction to meeting Anpanman, his favorite animated character: I mean, Anpanman was this kid's 8th word (although it sounds more like ohm-ohm-ohm) and he won't wear any shoes except his 50 yen (about 50 cent) pair of found-at-a-thrift-store sneakers that have Anpanman and Friends emblazoned all over them. He was the ONLY kid at Des's kindergarten not peeing himself from excitement at this opportunity. Well, maybe he did pee, but only because he was scared shitless. (see what I did there?)
