I recently threw a Pinkalicious-themed birthday party for my second grader, and I learned some cold, hard truths about myself. (1) I am not, and never will be, a Pinterest mom. I don't have enough tree bark, mason jars, or pastry chef training to compete. (2) I think all second graders look exactly the same and it's very hard to be a gracious host or summon children when their parents arrive if you have no idea who anyone is. (3) Being kind of mean to other people's kids gives me the second wind needed to carry on in the face of severe tests of my patience. These things are true of me, and I accept them.
But, I also learned some practical lessons. For instance, 15 eight-year-old girls technically qualifies as a "gaggle." A gaggle is too many for one party with only two adult chaperones. Take note of these additional tips:
1. Invitations
2. Food
4. Cake
4. Favors
5. Budget
At least my daughter isn't old enough for sleepover parties yet. I'm going to need the next few years to prepare.
